How to Become a Mental Health Ambassador

Employees interested in becoming a mental health ambassador must complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the sign-up form
  2. Get supervisor approval
  3. Attend a Mental Health Ambassador training session

Upcoming Trainings

Each session is limited to 25 participants, and dates are offered throughout the year. If you can’t attend a scheduled session, sign-up to be notified of future sessions.

Training is led by JHEAP clinicians and covers:
  • The role of a Mental Health Ambassador
  • Understanding stigma
  • Skill-building: listening, connecting, and setting boundaries
  • Overview of JHEAP services and other JHU resources
  • Interactive role plays and group discussion

What You’re Signing Up For

After the initial 2-hour training, ambassadors receive a digital badge and certificate to help promote their role. Trained ambassadors are invited to quarterly meetings and optional additional trainings.

The ongoing time commitment is no more than 3 hours per quarter and ongoing participation is voluntary.

The role includes:
  • Serving as a connector to JHEAP and other JHU resources
  • Modeling inclusive language and behavior around mental health
  • Listening with empathy and compassion
The role is NOT:
  • Diagnosing conditions
  • Giving advice or counseling
  • Providing mental health care services
  • Acting as a peer responder
