Flexible Spending Accounts

A Health Care FSA saves you money by allowing you to pay for certain health care expenses – such as co-pays, deductibles, or medical equipment – with tax-free dollars. A Dependent Care FSA reimburses you for qualified dependent care expenses such as daycare that enable you and your spouse to work or attend school full time.

Health Savings Account

A Health Saving Account (HSA) is a tax-favored savings account created for the purpose of paying health care expenses. You must be enrolled in the High Deductible Health Plan in order to open and contribute to the account. Unlike the Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA), the HSA funds belong to you and roll over from year to year, so you can choose to use them for eligible expenses now — or save them for later.

Life/Dependent Life

JHU offers basic life insurance at no cost to full-time benefits-eligible faculty, staff, and LIUNA bargaining unit members, plus the option to purchase additional coverage for themselves and their dependents.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

JHU automatically provides basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage for full-time, benefits-eligible faculty and staff and also offers the option to buy additional coverage. AD&D insurance pays a benefit to you and your insured family members if you die or are seriously injured as the result of an accident.

JHU offers, free of charge, long-term disability insurance to all full-time, benefits-eligible faculty, staff, and LIUNA bargaining unit members who have completed one year of service. Such insurance pays out a portion of your income when disability makes work impossible over a long period of time. We also offer the ability to purchase short-term coverage, which provides a portion of income for disabilities that cause shorter-duration absence from work.

Commuter Assistance

Managed by WEX, our commuter assistance program allows you to pay for public transportation or parking with pre-tax dollars, saving you money on your commute. You may even be eligible for a JHU transit subsidy.

Life Events

Although you’ll select your benefits when you first enroll or during annual enrollment, certain “qualified life events,” such as getting married or having a baby, enable you to make changes to your coverage outside those times.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act allows you to continue your health coverage for up to 18 months following a change of employment or family status. COBRA rates vary by employment status.
