Wedad’s Story

Short Separator

When I applied to Johns Hopkins, everyone said it would be a big challenge. I had four children at that time and it was hard. But once I applied, I was connected with all the departments virtually, and the amount of support they gave me, and my family, just amazed me.

1:1 Emotional Support

Through JHEAP, JHU employees and their household family members receive free confidential consultation, counseling, and referrals for help with stress at work or at home, emotional distress, a difficult life transition, or other challenges.*

Individuals receive up to 6 free confidential, short-term counseling sessions per issue each year.

You can call 888-978-1262 or visit JHEAP online 24/7, 365 days a year. A clinician will listen with compassion, provide support, and connect you with helpful resources.

*Please note that special considerations may apply to cases involving household family members who are minors under age 18.

How to Reach JHEAP

When you call, caring and professional counselors will listen, provide support, and help you identify resources and next steps. If you choose to arrange a tele-video or in-person appointment, JHEAP will provide referrals to licensed clinicians in your area. You can also schedule an appointment with a member of the JHEAP Onsite Clinical Care Team located on various Johns Hopkins campuses.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is the cornerstone of JHEAP. We recognize that many concerns are extremely personal, and JHEAP clinicians handle all information shared, whether by phone or in person, with the highest level of sensitivity. No one will know that you are receiving JHEAP services unless you choose to share that information yourself or sign a release giving your clinician permission to disclose such information.

There are, however, a few important exceptions to confidentiality, such as situations involving risk of harm to yourself or others, or cases of abuse involving children or vulnerable adults when a perpetrator has been identified. Your JHEAP clinician will review these exceptions and the confidentiality guidelines with you in detail.

Sometimes clients ask whether a supervisor or other Johns Hopkins employees can access JHEAP records. Rest assured that JHEAP records are kept completely separate from all other JHU and JHMI records. These files cannot be accessed or released without your written permission or a court order. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please discuss them with your JHEAP clinician.
