Degree Seeking Credit Courses
If you are pursuing your degree, tuition assistance for faculty, staff and bargaining unit members covers undergraduate and graduate studies at an accredited school.
Non Degree-Seeking Credit Courses at JHU
Not seeking a degree? Tuition assistance is available for part-time credit courses taken through one of JHU’s academic divisions.
Eligibility
You’re eligible for tuition assistance after completing your new hire probationary period of full-time employment as a faculty, staff, UNITE HERE or LiUNA bargaining unit member. You must remain in a full-time position while enrolled in courses.
To receive tuition assistance, you must meet the eligibility criteria both at the time of application submission and at the time of payment processing.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, employees under disciplinary action within 12 months of any academic period or at the time of submitting an application are not eligible for benefits under this Plan.
The benefit is available only during periods in which a faculty, staff, or bargaining unit member is employed full-time, or during periods of authorized leave not exceeding one year in duration from which the faculty or staff member will return to full-time employment.
Retirees are also eligible for this benefit. Visiting faculty and staff, residents, interns and post-doctoral fellows are not eligible.
About the Program
Covered Academic Credit Courses
There is a $5,250 annual family limit on tuition assistance for faculty, staff, retirees, and their spouses/domestic partners and dependent children. Within this calendar limit, dependents’ spending is limited to $2,625. You are responsible for any spending that exceeds the limits, and for tuition costs for courses not passed or completed (i.e., withdrawn or dropped).
Faculty and staff are eligible for 100% remission for credit courses, and 25% remission for private credit instruction at Peabody up to the annual limit. The annual benefit amount is based on the calendar year in which the course starts.
The calendar year maximum for credit courses is a total combined amount across all tuition assistance for-credit programs including any undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking courses.
Courses Not Covered
Courses offered by individual JHU departments are not covered. GRE courses and other test preparation courses are not covered.
Taxability
In compliance with IRS regulations (section 127), employer-provided educational assistance is exempt from taxation up to a maximum of $5,250 per calendar year (determined by payment date of the course). Taxes will be deducted from any reimbursement over $5,250 and you will receive the net cost. If you are earning your degree at JHU or utilize the direct bill payment option, you will be responsible for paying imputed income taxes on any benefit over $5,250. This amount will be deducted from your paycheck throughout the year. Any benefit payment processed in November or December will be taxed in the following calendar year. Please consult with your tax advisor for additional information.

Required Continuing Education Courses

Eligibility

Visiting faculty and staff, residents, interns, postdoctoral fellows, retirees, spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children are not eligible.
About the Program
Courses must be required for the employee to maintain a job-required professional certification or license regulated by the state licensing board, and must be a credit or noncredit course that provides or can be translated to continuing education units to be eligible. Documentation of attendance and Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits earned must be provided.
Full-time faculty and staff receive 100% remission via a fund transfer to their department for successfully completed and approved outside courses, conferences and seminars. There is no annual dollar limit or reduction of annual limits for approved continuing education courses at JHU or outside of JHU.
Taxability: Reimbursements for job-required continuing education earning CME credit are not taxed.
How to Participate
Courses outside of JHU can be paid for by the faculty/staff member or the department. Once the documentation below is submitted and approved, the department will be credited. If paid by the faculty or staff member, they will be reimbursed by their department.
Submit a signed Tuition Remission for Required Continuing Education Courses Application along with the following information to the Benefits Service Center:
- The Tuition Remission Benefit Application with the department budget number included;
- A copy of the paid receipt reflecting form of payment for the workshop;
- A copy of the certificate of attendance with CME credits indicated;

Documentation of successful completion must be provided within one year of the date that the course was completed.
Staff Development
The Staff Development Remission Plan allows you to take courses offered by Learning Solutions. Learning Solutions helps members of the university community develop skills and capabilities that advance organizational, unit, and personal growth.
Eligibility
If you are a full- or part-time faculty, staff, or bargaining unit member, you are eligible for work-related or personal growth training (staff development).
Limited eligibility is also available for temporary or student workers and post-doctoral fellows based on space availability and payment of the course cost by the department.
About the Program
If you’re a non-bargaining unit staff member, you’re entitled to a minimum of three full days of training per year. You can choose courses that focus on your current job duties or your professional aspirations to learn new skills, enhance your existing strengths, explore new possibilities, or simply gain a deeper understanding of how Johns Hopkins operates.
If you’re a bargaining unit member, connect with your manager for approval prior to registering.
How to Participate
Faculty and staff must have budget authorization and supervisory approval to attend the courses offered by Learning Solutions. Courses that faculty and staff attend are charged to the Staff Development Remission Plan.
If a faculty or staff member registers for a course but fails to attend, or if they do not cancel at least seven days prior to the course, a no-show fee will be charged to the departmental budget number. Departments are responsible for cancellations if a staff member transfers to another department or terminates employment with the university. Work-related issues do not count as a valid excuse. The one-week notice for cancellation is waived only for emergencies, and written documentation is required.
For more information and to register for courses, please visit Learning Solutions on the JHU Human Resources website.
