In order to comply with federal law, all employees hired after Nov. 6, 1986, must complete a Form I-9 and provide evidence of identity and employment authorization to document that they are authorized to work in the United States.
Employment Eligibility Verification
You must complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 by the end of your first day of work for pay. A Human Resources staff member for your division will contact you to ensure that Section 2 of the Form I-9 is completed within 3 days of employment.
All employees hired on or after Nov. 15, 2009, must also be E-verified, using an internet-based employment verification system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with the Social Security Administration. This E-Verify requirement also applies to individuals hired before Nov. 15, 2009 who are currently supported by a federal contract.

There are two options for completing your I-9 remotely:
- Recommended option: Departmental HR staff can use the CUPA-HR I-9 Reciprocal Processing Consortium to find a member organization near the remote location. It is easy to use and is free of charge. Visit the CUPA-HR website or contact HRBusinessServices@jhu.edu to learn more.
- Alternate option: Work with a notary public to complete Section 2 of the Form I-9.
