Tuition Assistance for Dependent Children at JHU
Eligibility
The dependent child of a faculty, staff, or UNITE HERE bargaining unit member is eligible once the employee has completed 120 days of full-time employment and continues in a full-time position while the dependent is enrolled in courses.
The dependent child of a LIUNA bargaining unit member is eligible once the employee has completed 90 days of full-time employment and continues in a full-time position while the dependent is enrolled in courses.
The benefit is available only during periods in which a faculty, staff, or bargaining unit member is employed full-time, or during periods of authorized leave not exceeding one year in duration from which the faculty, staff or bargaining unit member will return to full-time employment.
Dependent children of JHU retirees are also eligible.
To be considered a “dependent child”, the child must:
- be a U.S. citizen, resident alien or a resident of Canada or Mexico;
- not file a joint tax return if married unless the return is filed only to claim a refund of tax when neither spouse is required to file, and no tax liability would exist for either spouse if separate returns were filed;
- be a blood descendent of the first degree, legally adopted or a stepchild;
- have the same principal residence as the employee for more than half the year excluding temporary absences such as residing on campus (special rules may apply to children of divorced or separated parents);
- be under 19 years old or, if between the ages of 19 thru the end of the calendar year in which they turn 23, be a full-time student; and
- not provide over one-half of his or her own support for the calendar year.
Information on dependent eligibility and documentation requirements can be found here.
Visiting faculty and staff, residents, interns and post-doctoral fellows are not eligible for this benefit.
About the Program
ACADEMIC CREDIT COURSES:
There is a $5,250 annual family limit on tuition remission for faculty, staff, bargaining unit members, retirees and their spouses, domestic partners and dependent children. Within the calendar year limit, dependents’ spending is limited to $2,625. A dependent child of two eligible JHU employees can receive a maximum benefit of $5,250 ($2,625 per employee) for the calendar year.
Dependent children are eligible for 50% remission at the Carey Business School, School of Education, School of Nursing, Peabody, Arts and Sciences (Graduate AAP, Summer Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs) and Engineering (Graduate EPP, Summer Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs). For private instruction at Peabody, dependent children are eligible for 25% remission. $100 per term or $50 per quarter remission is available at all other schools. The tuition remission amount is up to the annual limit.
The faculty, staff, or bargaining unit member is responsible for any spending that exceeds the limits, and for tuition costs for courses not completed (i.e., withdrawn or dropped).
The program does not cover courses offered by individual JHU departments or GRE and other test preparation courses.
NONCREDIT PERSONAL ENRICHMENT COURSES:
This plan covers only noncredit courses offered through Peabody and the Center for Talented Youth (CTY).
Dependent children are eligible for 50% remission at Peabody and CTY. For private instruction at Peabody, dependent children are eligible for 25% remission.
There is no annual dollar limit or reduction of annual limits for noncredit personal enrichment courses.
Taxability
Tuition remission used by an employee’s dependent child for undergraduate courses is tax-free. For graduate courses, it is considered taxable income to the employee and the university will withhold these taxes from their paycheck.
Any benefit provided for the dependent child of your domestic partner will be taxed. The university will withhold these taxes from your paycheck. Tax questions should be directed to JHU’s Tax Office at 443-997-8688.
How to Participate
Select the appropriate form and follow the registration procedures on the Division’s registration form. Present a signed and completed Tuition Remission Benefit Application for Dependent Child to the Registrar at the time of registration. The availability of the Tuition Remission Plan does not guarantee that an employee or family member will be accepted by any of JHU’s academic divisions. The employee should check with the Admissions Office of the academic division of their interest before applying for tuition remission.
Peabody Preparatory has a new registration system and paperless Tuition Remission process. This process is approved for use only at the Peabody Preparatory for eligible employees and is not available for use at the Peabody Conservatory.
