Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Eligibility

As a full-time faculty, staff, or LIUNA bargaining unit member who is actively at work, you can participate in a voluntary benefits program to purchase Hospital Indemnity Insurance. You may purchase it for yourself, as well as for your spouse/domestic partner and your dependent children up to age 26. Coverage is guaranteed issue if elected within 30 days of hire.

About the Program

Hospital Indemnity Insurance from Lincoln Financial provides you with a cash benefit you can use to help pay expenses when you have a covered hospital stay, due to an injury, sickness, or childbirth. If you’re admitted to a hospital or similar facility for 20 hours or more, you will receive a one-time payment to help cover the expenses.

The plans pay $1,000 to $4,000 per admission, depending on the type of stay (hospital vs. intensive care unit), and whether you choose the Low Plan or the High Plan. This insurance offers critical support to bridge the gap between your primary health coverage and unexpected expenses. You can use the cash benefit you receive from this plan to help you cover not just bills related to your medical care, but any other expenses as well.

  • Pays a lump-sum benefit payment to use however you see fit
  • The payment is made directly to you (unless otherwise assigned)
  • It can help pay out-of-pocket expenses related to medical care associated with covered accidents or sicknesses
  • In addition to medical care, you may use it to pay for things like childcare, lodging, or over-the-counter medication

Hospital indemnity insurance is a supplement to, not a substitute for, a health care insurance plan. The program is administered for JHU by Mercer Voluntary Benefits.
