Quick Links

Quick Links are side bar menu items found on interior pages. Quick Links can be links to media, external websites, or pages on the website. They are intended to be used as a related links section or to aid the website user.

It is recommended that Quick Links menus are limited to a maximum of 6 links. Quick Links are optional, so leaving the menus blank on a page will remove the Quick Links menu entirely from that page.

Terminology Used in This Section
  • Individual Page Quick Links: These Quick Links are created on a page-by-page basis and can not be shared between multiple pages.
  • Left WordPress Menu: Once you are logged into WordPress and viewing the WordPress dashboard, this Left WordPress Menu will be visible on the left hand side of all pages.
  • Page Editor: Once you are logged in and start creating a page or select a page to edit, you will see the page editing screen. This screen and the options available in it will change depending on the page template that is being used for the page.
  • Shared Quick Links: These Quick Links are created on a menu page and allow the Quick Links Menu to be shared between multiple pages.

Shared Quick Links

Shared Quick Links are menus that can be included on multiple pages of the website. To access shared Quick Links, select the left menu item titled “Shared Quick Links Menus” in WordPress.

Create a New Shared Quick Links Menu
  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Shared Quick Links Menus” from the left WordPress menu
  3. Select the “Add Shared Quick Links Menu” button next to the page title
  4. In the new page, title the menu (it is recommended to include the link names in the title)
  5. Add a new link to the menu by selecting the “Add Link” button
  6. Select the new “Select Link” button that appears
  7. Type in the URL to the website or media item you would like to add – these can be internal or external website links
  8. Include the “Link Text” that will be visible in the menu
  9. If this is an external website or media item, select the “Open link in a new tab” option
  10. Select the “Add Link” button
  11. Repeat as needed (it is recommended that you add no more than 6 links per section)
  12. Once you’ve added all links, select the “Update” button under the right-side box titled “Publish”
  13. Clear your cache/refresh the site to see menu changes
Update a Shared Quick Links Menu
  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Shared Quick Links Menus” from the left WordPress menu
  3. In the “Shared Quick Links Menus” section, hover over the Quick Links menu title you would like to update
  4. In the new menu that appears beneath the Quick Links menu title, select “Edit”
  5. Add a new link to the menu by selecting the “Add Link” button and then select the new “Select Link” button that appears; or select the pencil icon () next to the current link you would like to edit
  6. Type in the URL to the website or media item you would like to add – these can be internal or external website links
  7. Include the “Link Text” that will be visible in the menu
  8. If this is an external website or media item, select the “Open link in a new tab” option
  9. Select the “Add Link” button
  10. Repeat as needed (it is recommended that you add no more than 6 links per section)
  11. Once you’ve added all sub menu links, select the “Update” button under the right-side box titled “Publish”
  12. Clear your cache/refresh the site to see menu changes

Individual Page Quick Links

Per-page Quick Links are only available to the page they are created on and cannot be shared between multiple pages.

Adding Quick Links to a Page
  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Pages” from the left WordPress menu
  3. Find the page you wish to include Quick Links on and hover over the Page title
  4. In the new menu that appears beneath the Quick Links menu title, select “Edit”
  5. Scroll toward the bottom of the page editor and find the “Quick Links Menu” section
  6. Add a new link to the menu by selecting the “Add Link” button and then select the new “Select Link” button that appears; or select the pencil icon () next to the current link you would like to edit
  7. Type in the URL to the website or media item you would like to add – these can be internal or external website links
  8. Include the “Link Text” that will be visible in the menu
  9. If this is an external website or media item, select the “Open link in a new tab” option
  10. Select the “Add Link” button
  11. Repeat as needed (it is recommended that you add no more than 6 links per section)
