Main Menu

The main menu of the website is manually managed on the back end of the website. Access to the main menu is found under “Theme Settings” on the left menu in WordPress.

Terminology Used in This Section
  • Left WordPress Menu: Once you are logged into WordPress and viewing the WordPress dashboard, this Left WordPress Menu will be visible on the left hand side of all pages.
  • Main Menu Option: The main menu options are the titles and links included along the top of the website for navigation.
  • Right Menu: Right menus are found on the right side of most editing screens in WordPress. They are normally white boxes that are titled per their function. Each group will be referenced in the manual by their group title.
The main menu may only be updated by an Administrator level user on the JHU HR website. Contact your Administrator directly to request main menu changes

Accessing the Main Menu

Main menu options are the only thing found in the “Theme Settings” section of WordPress. To access the main menu options page, select “Theme Settings” on the left WordPress menu.

Main Menu Option(s)

Adding or editing a main menu option requires a mega menu option to be created within the “Theme Settings” section found in WordPress. In order to create a new main menu option, follow all of the sections included below.

Adding a New Main Menu Option

Following the directions below allow you to add a new main menu option. To complete this how-to and allow for visibility on the front-end of the website, follow the proceeding tabs in this section of the manual titled “Main Menu Option Titles” and “Main Menu Option URLs.”

  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Theme Settings” from the left WordPress menu
  3. Find the “Mega Menu” container and scroll to the bottom of the page
  4. Select the “Add Row” button from the bottom of this container (see #1 in the image included below)
  5. A new row will appear – follow the “Main Menu Option Titles” section and “Main Menu Option URLs” section to complete this setup

In order to create or update the visible title of the main menu option, follow the directions below

  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Theme Settings” from the left WordPress menu
  3. Locate the “Tab Name” section (left column)
  4. In the row you wish to update, update the far-left box with the new title of the new main menu option title you would like to include (see #2 in the image included below) – this will be visible on the main menu of the website
  5. Once you’re done, select the “Update” button in the right menu titled “Publish”
  6. Clear your cache/refresh the site to see menu changes
Main Menu Option URLs

Follow the directions below to update the URL that the main menu option will direct to once selected by the user.

  1. Log into WordPress
  2. Select “Theme Settings” from the left WordPress menu
  3. Locate the “Tab Main Link” section (middle column)
  4. Update the current URL listed for a main menu option by selecting the pencil icon () located next to the URL; or choose the “Select Link” button that appears after creating a new main menu option (see #3 in the image included below)
  5. Type the URL to the page of the Human Resources website you would like to add – this cannot be an external page
  6. Include the “Link Text” that will be visible when hovering over your main menu option
  7. Select the “Add Link” button
  8. Follow the Sub Menu Links section to add links to your new main menu item, if needed
  9. Once you’re done, select the “Update” button in the right menu titled “Publish”
  10. Clear your cache/refresh the site to see menu changes

Organizing Menus

You can reorganize any main menu option or sub menu link by dragging the rows to their desired order. Once you’ve organized the menu, select the “Update” button under the right menu titled “Publish” for changes to take effect. Remember to clear your cache/refresh the site to see menu changes.
