Page Settings How-To

This section outlines what each option panel controls within the page editor screen. Option panels are found on the right side menu of every page on the back-end of the website. Follow the Creating & Updating Pages how-to for more information on accessing the page editor.

For a general overview of page settings and options, check out the general Page Settings section of this site guide.

Terminology Used in This Section
  • Page Editor: Once you are logged in and start creating a page or select a page to edit, you will see the page editing screen. This screen and the options available in it will change depending on the page template that is being used for the page.
  • Right Menu: Right menus are found on the right side of most editing screens in WordPress. They are normally white boxes that are titled per their function. Each group will be referenced in the manual by their group title.

Publish Box Options

This section reviews the options found within the “Publish” sub menu found within the page editor. The “Publish” right menu found on the back-end of the website (follow the Creating & Updating Pages how-to for directions on how to access the back-end of a page).

Preview Page

Preview Page

Once content is entered, select the top “Preview” button to view your page with (updated) content. This will not publish your page but instead open a new tab/window for you to view your content updates. Feel free to select this button as often as you’d like to review changes you’ve made on the back-end of the site before publishing a page.

Save a Page Draft

Saving a Page Draft

If you have a new page that has yet to be published, you can save a draft of your page. This will allow your content to be saved on the back-end of the website without releasing it to the front-end of the website for users to see. Once content is entered, select the “Save Draft” button (as pictured above). This will not publish your page.

Scheduling a Publish Date/Time

Scheduling a Publish Date/Time

This option is only available to new pages and cannot be set for published (live website) pages. Before starting this process, be sure to follow the Saving a Page Draft how-to included above.

Once your page has been saved as a draft – complete the following:

  1. Select the “Edit” link next to the calendar icon that says “Publish Immediately”
  2. From the drop down that appears (pictured above), select your date/time that the draft will go live and select the “OK” button
  3. The button in this “Publish” section will now say “Schedule” – select this to schedule your page to go live date/time
  4. You’re all set and your page will now publish on the date/time set above

This right menu box of settings controls the order/hierarchy of pages on the website. This setting generally sets up the sub menus found on interior pages.

Selecting the parent of the current page controls permalink creation and its hierarchy of the website. This selection controls secondary menus only. Please note that you can only update the main menu as an administrator.

  1. Access the page editor screen for the page you wish to modify
  2. On the right side find the “Page Attributes” section
  3. In the “Page Attributes” menu, click the “Parent” drop-down (this drop-down contains a list of all the Pages already published for your site)
  4. Select the appropriate parent page from the drop-down menu to make the current page a child page
  5. Click “Publish” when ready
Template

Individual Pages can be set to use a specific custom Page Template that has been created specifically for the Human Resources website. When this is toggled, the Page Template will override the Page Template that is active on your theme. The templates listed below are the only options that should be used when creating new page on the website.

  • Default Template: A 3/4 width template that allows users to see all pages listed under the “In This Section” sub menu upon page load.
  • No Sidebar: Intended for landing pages, this is a full width template includes a drop-down “In This Section” sub menu.
Order

This is the numerical order that the page should be found within a secondary sub menu. To organize your menu, simply add the number corresponding to the number order you would like the menu to be in. Please note that you can only update the main menu as an administrator.

Directions on how to create a shared or a one-off menu can both be found in the Quick Links section of this manual.
